” I hope you know you are capable & brave & significant even when it feels like you’re not.”
To all the moms who don’t feel like they are enough, this one is for you.
My mom said when she brought me home from the hospital it felt like she was walking on clouds for weeks. After Arctic was born I felt like every day was Christmas morning! I had so much energy and just wanted to jump back into my old routine. I did not realize a baby changes everything.
Lately my mind has been focused on the future. I have been worrying about work, cleaning the house, wondering if I will ever sleep again and hoping I am not doing everything wrong. When I allow my mind to focus on the future I feel anxious and very overwhelmed.
The first month of Arctics life I had my mom stay with me. I will forever cherish this time we had together! It was so special to learn how to be a mom from the woman who raised me. My mom gave me some advice before she left..” just enjoy each day because even though the days are long the years are short.”
I spent many hours on baby blogs, pinterest and baby websites trying to figure out what to purchase before Arctic was born. There are so many baby products on the market.
Every conversation I have with other mommas has helped me and I hope this helps you too! I really had no idea what I would actually need and I did not want to invest in items I would not use. Here is what I have found to be essential for the baby and I this first month…
When Arctic was first born we could not believe how tiny she was! I was nervous about having her sleep in the bassinet. I was researching one night and came across the DockATot. It offers a safe, cozy and soothing environment for babies to lounge and sleep in. We feel so much more relaxed with her right beside us in the DockATot at night. The separate mattress allows an easy transition from our bed to the crib. My chihuahua seems to think it is his new bed! He lounges in it every chance he gets.
Nursing Bras & Nursing Pads
When I left the hospital I did not own a single nursing bra! I learned really quickly that they are essential. I took a trip to Destination Maternity in Kitsilano and they had some great options for nursing bras. At my shower I was given reusable and disposable nursing pads. Unless you want to be covered in breast milk these are essential! When my reusable ones are in the wash I use the disposable ones.
I was at an audition and I saw this mom with a cover over her carseat. I asked her where she purchased it and she told me online and the brand is milk snob. I really like using the milk snob cover for a breast feeding cover and for the carseat.
In the hospital I learned so much about breast feeding and learning my babies cues. The nurses were amazing. Our baby was so small so I needed to be pumping to top her up after breastfeeding. I have been using the Swing Maxi- Double Electric Breast Pump. It has been so helpful!
I have so many adorable outfits from my baby shower! I can not walk past a store now without going to check the baby section. I know she is growing fast so I really enjoyed getting hand me downs from my friends and family! Arctic loves to be warm so my favourite clothing item at the moment are the sleep sacks. This one is from a local Vancouver company called VONBON and it is a breeze to untie and do a diaper change! It is really soft organic cotton and the fold over mitts keep Arctic from scratching herself.
Our first drive home from the hospital was so nerve racking. I sat in the back and watched Arctic breathe the entire way home! So far I have really enjoyed the Maxi Cosi car seat. It is light weight, easy to adjust and simple to clip into the base. I just ordered the adapters for my stroller so I can go straight from the car to the stroller.
I really enjoy the UPPAbaby Vista stroller! We bought ours from a friend and it is so easy to set up and maneuver. I put the DockATot right in the bassinet and Arctic sleeps peacefully while we stroll around. We have the rain covers, coffee holder and the option for second & third child transportation for down the road! The basket underneath makes picking up groceries a breeze.
I am loving wearing Arctic in a carrier. I had a little panicked moment when I felt like I never had my hands free between nursing and rocking Arctic. I have the JJ Cole Agility Carrier. It is really easy to use and so far no back pain. I am really interested in getting a ring sling carrier. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would like to use the Ergo Baby carrier for hiking this summer as well! Let me know your suggestions for baby wraps- so far I am really loving using a wrap!
Diapers, Wipes and a Change Table
We are using disposable diapers at the moment. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for cloth diapers? We would like to give them a try! I am currently looking for a change table as well. I have been using change pads but I can tell I need something more sturdy and easy to wipe down. Please comment with your suggestions!
I spent my entire pregnancy in the bath. I constantly wanted to be in the water and that explains our little water baby. I really like the angel care bath support. I can fill up the tub and rest her in the insert. I have been using Burts Bees Baby Shampoo & Wash. It is gentle and smells amazing!
When I first got home from the hospital my back was in so much pain. This little rocking chair has been so great for nursing, pumping and rocking the baby to sleep! I look forward to spending my days in that cozy little spot.
Swaddles & Blankets
I love the fuzzy little blankets and beautiful swaddles! I have a basket full of them in my room. I am constantly doing laundry and these little swaddles are quite handy for everything. I think my chihuahua is pretty happy about all the new blankets around the house!
Thanks for taking the time to read my blog! I look forward to your comments & suggestions. Xx
